A 19 year old farmer in Centre County, he enlisted there on 16 August 1861, and mustered into service as Private, Company A, 45th Pennsylvania Infantry on 9 September in Harrisburg.
On the Campaign
He was killed in action at Fox's Gap on on South Mountain on 14 September 1862.
