An 18 year old laborer in Chatham, he enlisted on 18 September 1861 in Tioga County, and mustered into service as Private, Company H, 45th Pennsylvania Infantry in October in Harrisburg.
On the Campaign
He was mortally wounded in action at Fox's Gap on on South Mountain on 14 September 1862.
