Before Antietam
A 39 year old puddler in Centre County, he enlisted there on 16 August 1861, and mustered into service as Private, Company A, 45th Pennsylvania Infantry on 9 September in Harrisburg.
On the Campaign
He was mortally wounded in action at Fox's Gap on on South Mountain on 14 September 1862.

He died of his wounds, place and date not given.
