Age 19, he enlisted on 17 August 1861 in Hazleton and mustered into service as a Private in Company N, 28th Pennsylvania Infantry on 20 August in Philadelphia.
On the Campaign
He was wounded in action at Antietam on 17 September 1862.
The rest of the War
He was discharged for his wounds on 19 March 1863 at the US General Hospital in Baltimore.
