Before Antietam
Age 40, he enlisted on 13 August 1861 in Philadelphia and mustered into service there as a Private in Company M, 28th Pennsylvania Infantry on 23 August.
On the Campaign
He was mortally wounded, his skull fractured, in action at Antietam on 17 September 1862.
The rest of the War
He was admitted to a US Army hospital in Frederick, MD on 19 September but died there of his wounds on 24 September 1862.
