Age 19, a boatman in Plymouth, he enlisted and mustered for 3 months' service on 20 April 1861 in Harrisburg as Private, Company E, 4th Pennsylvania Infantry. He mustered out with them on 27 July. He enlisted again and mustered as Private, Company D, 51st Pennsylvania Infantry, date not given.

On the Campaign

He was killed in action at Antietam on 17 September 1862.
