Age 16, giving his age as 18, he enlisted in Potter County on 16 October 1861 and mustered into service as Private, Company G, 53rd Pennsylvania Infantry on 29 October in Harrisburg.

On the Campaign

He was killed in action at Antietam on 17 September 1862.

References & notes

His service from the Card File,1 which says only that he was "not accounted for" on the Company muster-out roll; he's listed as Adolph I. Nelson. His death at Antietam from a notice in the Potter County Journal of 24 September 1862 found in Victor L. Beebe's History of Potter County, Pennsylvania (1934).
