Age 28, he enlisted in Potter County on 16 October 1861 and mustered into service as Private, Company G, 53rd Pennsylvania Infantry on 29 October in Harrisburg.
On the Campaign
He was wounded in action, his right arm "shot off" at Antietam on 17 September 1862.
