Before Antietam

A 19 year old miner in Philadelphia, he enrolled and mustered into service there on 27 August 1861 as Private, Company D, 8th Pennsylvania Cavalry.

On the Campaign

He was captured on 13 September 1862, probably in a skirmish near Middletown, MD.

The rest of the War

He was a prisoner until 1 April 1863. He reenlisted on 31 December 1863 and was promoted to Corporal on 1 March 1865. He transferred to Company D, 16th Pennsylvania Cavalry on 24 July and mustered out with them on 11 August 1865.
