Age 16, from Richmond, he enlisted in Courtney's Battery on 8 July 1861 and was discharged by special order on 21 September 1861. He enlisted again, and mustered as Private in Parker's Richmond Battery, Light Artillery on 14 March 1862 in Richmond.

On the Campaign

He was wounded in action Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was absent, wounded until April 1863, detailed as a nurse at the CSA General Hospital in Liberty, VA as a nurse since 15 November 1862. He as wounded again, at Gettysburg, PA on 3 July 1863. He was promoted to Corporal on 15 September 1864.
