Age 26, he enlisted on 1 November 1861 and mustered into service as a Private in Company G, 90th Pennsylvania Infantry on 12 November in Philadelphia.

On the Campaign

He was wounded by a gunshot to the leg in action at Antietam on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was admitted to a US Army hospital in Frederick, MD on 21 September and discharged on 14 January 1863. He was listed as "not accounted for" on his Company's muster-out roll.
