A 20 year old farmer in Lawrence County, he enlisted in Pittsburgh on 27 August 1861 and mustered into service as Private, Company C, 100th Pennsylvania Infantry on 31 August at Camp Wilkins near Pittsburgh.

On the Campaign

He was killed in action at Fox's Gap on South Mountain on 14 September 1862.
