Age 21, he enlisted on 10 July 1861 in Georgetown and mustered into service as Private, Company B, 6th Pennsylvania Reserves on 27 July in Washington, DC.

He was mortally wounded in action near Turner's Gap on South Mountain, MD, on 14 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He died of his wounds on 1 October 1862 in a hospital in Middletown, MD.
