Age 22, he enlisted on 7 August 1862 and mustered as Private, Company E, 123rd Pennsylvania Infantry on 8 August in Pittsburgh.

On the Campaign

He was admitted to a US Army hospital in Frederick, MD with a gunshot wound (probably accidental) on 18 September 1862 and transferred to Baltimore on 24 September.

The rest of the War

He mustered out with his Company on 12 May 1863.
