Before Sharpsburg

Age 21, he enlisted as 4th Corporal, Company A, First South Carolina Infantry on 13 July 1861 in the Barnwell District. He was promoted to 3rd Corporal on 14 December and 2nd Corporal on 29 January 1862.

On the Campaign

He was wounded and "disabled" in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was promoted to 4th Sergeant by the end of 1862 and reduced to 5th Sergeant in the Spring 1863, and back to 4th Sergeant in October. He was detached for duty at a hospital in Lynchburg, VA on 29 January 1864 and retired to the Invalid Corps between 30 April and 31 August 1864.
