Before Sharpsburg

A clerk in Charleston, he mustered as a Private in Company A of the Hampton Legion Infantry in 1861 and was promoted to Corporal in 1862. He was wounded at Seven Pines, VA on 30 June 1862.

On the Campaign

He was wounded in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was appointed Sergeant in 1863, was wounded again at Dandridge, TN in January 1864, and was surrendered at Appomattox Court House, VA on 9 April 1865.
