Age 30, he mustered as a Private in Company A of the Hampton Legion Infantry on 12 June 1861 in Charleston.

On the Campaign

He was wounded by a gunshot in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was at Martinsburg, VA on 23 September, listed as "wounded slightly," admitted to the South Carolina Hospital in Richmond, VA hospital on 25 September, then furloughed and discharged under the Alien Law ("never acquired a domicile") on 29 September. He received his final pay on 23 October and was admitted to Chimborazo Hospital #3 there on 14 November.

He reenlisted on 1 April 1864 in Columbia, SC, but was listed as a deserter in 1865.
