Age 35 (or 25), from Orangeburg, he enlisted and mustered as a Private in Company H, Hampton Legion Infantry on 24 October 1861 at Camp Hampton near Columbia, SC.
On the Campaign
He was captured in Maryland, probably at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.
The rest of the War
He was paroled near Sharpsburg on 27 September 1862 when he requested to not to be returned or exchanged back to the Confederacy, and was given permission to "go to and remain in any of the loyal States." He was listed afterward on the Company rolls as "absent unaccounted for," then as of 30 January 1863 as a deserter since 18 September 1862.
