Before Sharpsburg
Age 22, with his brother John, he mustered as Private in Company K, 19th Virginia Infantry on 20 May 1861 at Hillsboro, VA. He was in a hospital in Charlottesville ill with the measles in July and August 1862 and in Chimborazo Hospital, Richmond and one in Charlottesville in March and April 1862, and returned to duty on 18 June.
On the Campaign
He was captured in action at Turner's Gap on South Mountain, MD on 14 September 1862.
The rest of the War
He was paroled on 20 September 1862 at Keedysville, MD with no further military record.
