Son of a successful planter, in 1860 he was a 13 year old living with his parents, 6 siblings, and at least 3 slaves at Bowdon, Carroll County, GA. He enlisted there on 30 July 1861 and mustered as a Private in Company B, Cobb's Legion Infantry.

On the Campaign

He was killed in action at Crampton's Gap on South Mountain on 14 September 1862.

The rest of the War

His father William F Johnson filed a claim for his final pay in July 1863.
