Before Sharpsburg

A 21 year old farmer on his mother's place near Cheraw in Chesterfield County, he enlisted in 1861 as Corporal in Company B, 8th South Carolina Infantry, and was promoted to Sergeant. He was commissioned Junior 2nd Lieutenant on 13 May 1862 and promoted to 2nd Lieutenant (26 May) and First Lieutenant (30 July).

On the Campaign

He was wounded in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He resigned his commission in 1863.

After the War

By 1880 - and to at least 1900 - he was farming his own place in Red Hill, Marlboro County.
