He enlisted as Private in Company B, 12th South Carolina Infantry on 13 August 1861 at Yorkville (or 6 December at Pocotaligo).
On the Campaign
He was wounded in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862 and later listed as absent and "supposed to be dead."
