Before Antietam

A 19 year old clerk, he enlisted in Alexandria, VA as a Private in Company F, United States Mounted Rifles in on 19 June 1846 and was a Sergeant by 25 July 1848 and saw action in Mexico, possibly wounded at Chapultepec. He was appointed brevet 2nd Lieutenant, 6th US Infantry to date from 28 June 1848 and promoted to 2nd Lieutenant on 28 Sept 1848. He was further promoted to First Lieutenant on 9 June 1853 and Captain on 5 June 1860, then at Ft. Yuma, AZ. He had served in Kansas, on the Utah Expedition, and in California. He was at San Francisco at the start of the war and came east and joined the Army of the Potomac in 1861.

On the Campaign

He commanded Company G of the 6th US Infantry and the combined unit of the 6th Infantry and Company G of the First US at Antietam.

The rest of the War

He was promoted to Major of the 17th US Infantry on 20 Oct 1863 and honored during the war by brevets to Major (for Malvern Hill), Lieutenant Colonel (Fredericksburg), and Colonel (Gettysburg).

After the War

He continued in the Army and was transferred to the 26th US Infantry on 21 September 1866. He was unassigned from 15 March 1869 to 15 December 1870, when assigned to the 20th US Infantry. He was appointed Lieutenant Colonel of the 25th US Infantry on 1 Jan 1871 and retired on 7 Oct 1874.

By 1880 he was living in Wilmington, DE.
