Age 25, from the Lancaster District, he enlisted as Private, Company E, 12th South Carolina Infantry, date not given. He was wounded at Cold Harbor (Mechanicsville), VA on 26 June 1862.

On the Campaign

He was wounded again, and captured in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was briefly at a US Army hospital in Frederick, MD on 15 and 16 October 1862 before being transferred to Fort McHenry in Baltimore and on to Fortress Monroe, VA for exchange. He was surrendered with his Company at Appomattox Court House, VA on 9 April 1865.
