He was slightly wounded in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.

He transferred to a Cavalry unit, date not given, and survived the war.
After the War
In 1880 he was working his father's plantation near Hickory Grove in York County, and ran it himself from 1882, when his father died, to at least 1900.
