A 21 year old farmer at Hamburg, Edgefield District, he enlisted as Private, Company I, 7th South Carolina Infantry on 15 April 1861. He was appointed 4th Sergeant on 13 May 1862.

On the Campaign

He was wounded in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was in hospitals in Richmond into October 1862, then furloughed. He was probably discharged in early 1863.
