A 25 year old mail carrier in Cairo, Edgefield District, he enlisted as a Private in Company K, 7th South Carolina Infantry on 15 April 1861. He was detailed as a teamster from November into January 1862.

On the Campaign

He was severely wounded after he took the colors from the previous bearer, who had just been killed in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was detailed as a teamster again from January to August 1863, and in December 1864. He was surrendered on 26 April 1865 and paroled at Greensboro, NC on 2 May 1865.
