Before Sharpsburg

A 19 year old factory operative in Graniteville, Edgefield District, he enlisted as a Private in Company F, 7th South Carolina Infantry on 1 June 1861 and was promoted to 6th Corporal on 1 September 1861 and 5th Corporal in February 1862.

On the Campaign

He was wounded in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was elected 3rd Lieutenant on 21 September, but on furlough from 22 November to 1 January 1863. He was promoted to First Lieutenant on 25 February and Captain on 26 September 1863, but was again absent on furlough in February and March 1864. He was killed at the Wilderness, VA on 6 May 1864.

His brother Isaac enlisted in Company F in April 1864 at age 18, and was also killed in the Wilderness, less than a month later, on 6 May.
