Before Sharpsburg

A 19 year old farm worker in Abbeville, he enrolled as Private, Company D, 7th South Carolina Infantry on 18 July 1862.

On the Campaign

He was wounded in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was in hospitals in Lynchburg and Farmville, VA to at least the end of December 1862. He was wounded again, at Chickamauga, GA on 20 September 1863 and returned to duty about December. He was hit for the third time, by a gunshot to his right hand on 23 May 1864 on the North Anna River, VA, and he was in Jackson Hospital, Richmond to 26 June. He was surredenred on 26 April 1865 and paroled on 2 May at Greensboro, NC.
