Before Sharpsburg
In 1860 he was a 29 year old farmer (owning 3 slaves) living with his parents (23 slaves) and brother John (~3 slaves) on their plantation at Dorn's Mill, Edgefield District, SC. He enlisted on 15 April 1861 and mustered in Columbia, SC on 12 June as a Private in Company G, 7th South Carolina Infantry. He transferred to Company B, Hampton Legion Infantry about June 1862.
On the Campaign
He was sent to a hospital in Frederick, MD by 12 September, left behind, and captured there.
The rest of the War
He was in US Army General Hospital #1 in Frederick, MD to 19 September and afterward was a prisoner at Fort Delaware to 2 October, then sent to Aikens' Landing, VA for exchange, arriving there on 6 October. He was admitted to a Richmond, VA hospital and was formally exchanged on 10 November 1862, but was sent home on furlough that day and never returned. He died of disease at his father's home on 14 November 1863.
