Before Sharpsburg

A 17 year old farm worker at Lott's Post Office, Edgefield District, he enlisted as Private, Company H, 14th South Carolina Infantry on 1 September 1861 and served with them to about February 1862. In August 1862 he enlisted in Company F, 7th South Carolina Infantry.

On the Campaign

He was wounded and captured in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was paroled 30 September and listed as absent without leave in November 1862. He did not return to the 7th Infantry but enlisted on 1 September 1863 in Beauregard's Light Artillery and was with them to late 1864.
