Before Sharpsburg

A 17 year old medical student in Elberton, GA, he enlisted as Private, Company D, 7th South Carolina Infantry on 12 August 1861.

On the Campaign

He was wounded in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862 and was promoted to 3rd Corporal the same day.

The rest of the War

He was in Howard's Grove Hospital in Richmond, VA as a patient to 2 November and as a Nurse to 1 December. He returned to duty and was captured near Knoxville, TN on 5 December 1863, held at Camp Chase, OH by 15 December, and sent on to the Rock Island Barracks, IL on 6 January 1864. He was released on 21 May 1865.
