Before Sharpsburg
A 20 year old farm worker at Diamond Hill, Abbeville District, he enlisted as Private, Company D, 7th South Carolina Infantry on 15 April 1861.
On the Campaign
He was wounded in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.
The rest of the War
He was in a hospital in Richmond to 30 September then furloughed. He shot himself in the foot at Chancellorsville, VA on 7 May 1863 and was in Richmond hospitals into August 1863. He was surrendered on 26 April 1865 and paroled at Greensboro, NC on 2 May 1865.
