Kenneth M. Newton

A 26 year old farmer on his father's place near Conwayboro, Horry District, he enlisted as Private, Company L, 7th South Carolina Infantry on 26 June 1861. He was ill in hospitals in November-December 1861 and March-June 1862.

He was commissioned 2nd Lieutenant on 17 September 1862, probably on the field at Sharpsburg.

He was wounded by a gunshot to his chest in action at Gettysburg, PA on 2 July 1863 and was furloughed for 20 days in August 1863. He was hospitalized, sick, from June to October 1864. He was killed at Bentonville, NC on 19 March 1865.

His service from the Roll 1 (as age 33 at enlistment) and Swain,2 who has his birth in Bricksville, NC. Details from family genealogists, at least one of whom has his middle initial as "N", and the US Census for 1860.
