Served in the Regular Army 1855-58 and saw action in Mexico. In 1861 he was made Colonel of the 11th GA Regiment. He then commanded a brigade in D.R. Jones' Division during Seven Days and Second Manassas campaigns.

Appointed Brigadier General in November 1862, he commanded his Brigade in Hood's Division at Fredericksburg Suffolk Gettysburg (where he was wounded) Chickamauga and Knoxville. He led his Brigade in Field's Division at the Wilderness Spotsylvania Cold Harbor Petersbu
After the War
He was a freight agent police chief and tax collector.
