A 22 year old factory operative in Graniteville, Edgefield District, he enlisted as 3rd Corporal of Company F, 7th South Carolina Infantry on 1 June 1861. He was promoted to First Corporal in January 1862 but reduced to 2nd Corporal in May.

On the Campaign

He was killed in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.
