Before Sharpsburg

A 21 year old student from Coleman's Crossroads, Edgefield District, he enlisted as Private, Company E, 7th South Carolina Infantry on 15 April 1861. He was promoted succesively to 6th and 5th Corporal by October 1861. He reenlisted in Company M, as 3rd Corporal, on 11 February 1862. He was slightly wounded at Save Station, VA on 29 June 1862 and elected 3rd Lieutenant on 24 July.

On the Campaign

He was wounded in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862 and promoted to 2nd Lieutenant the same day.

The rest of the War

He resigned his commission on 27 May 1864 while under a charge of cowardice, possibly from action at Chancellorsville, VA. He then enlisted in Company K, 2nd South Carolina Artillery and served with them to the end of the war.
