Before Sharpsburg
Orphaned young, he was raised by his namesake uncle Luke and, later, his aunt Catherine Devore. On 15 April 1861, then age 19, from Longmires, Edgefield District, he enlisted as Private, Company K, 7th South Carolina Infantry. He was promoted 2nd Corporal on 13 May 1862.
On the Campaign
He was wounded in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.
The rest of the War
He was promoted to First Corporal on 22 September, was home on a furlough and returned, and was appointed 5th Sergeant in about January 1863. He was very ill in Richmond, VA hospitals from March to June 1863, then furloughed home. He was promoted to 4th Sergeant in July but died at home on 30 July 1863.
