Before Sharpsburg

Age 23, he enlisted as Private, Company F, 7th South Carolina Infantry on 4 June 1861 and transferred to Company H the next day. He was appointed First Corporal on 13 May 1862.

On the Campaign

He as promoted to First Sergeant on 14 September and was wounded by a gunshot in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was in hospitals in Culpeper and Lynchburg, VA into late November 1862. He was wounded again, severely in the thigh, at the Wilderness, VA on 6 May 1864. He was surrendered on 26 April 1865 and paroled at Greensboro, NC on 2 May 1865.
