A 22 year old farmer at West Creek, Edgefield District, he enlisted as Private, Company E, 7th South Carolina Infantry on 15 April 1861. He reenlisted in Company M on 11 February 1862.

He was killed in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.
