A 17 year old farm boy in the Edgefield District, he enlisted as Private, Company A, 7th South Carolina Infantry on 9 August 1862.

On the Campaign

He was wounded in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He deserted from his unit at Gettysburg, PA on 2 July 1863 and was sent to Philadelphia 4 July then on to Fort Delaware. He enlisted in US service, with Ahl's Independent Battery, (First) Delaware Heavy Artillery, mustered-in on 27 July 1863 as the battery was first organized, and served in the garrison at Fort Delaware to the end of the war.
