Age 16, from the Edgefield District, he enlisted as Private, Company B, 14th South Carolina Infantry on about 1 September 1861.

He was wounded in action at Harpers Ferry on 15 September 1862.
The rest of the War
He died in a hospital in Chester, PA on 19 August 1863, cause not given. We can assume he was captured, as Chester was a Federal town, perhaps on the Gettysburg Campaign.
