Age 16, from the Edgefield District, he enlisted as Private, Company D, 14th South Carolina Infantry on about 1 September 1861.
On the Campaign
He was wounded in action at Boteler's Ford near Shepherdstown on 20 September 1862.
The rest of the War
He was wounded again at Spotsylvania Court House, VA in May 1864. He was surrendered at Appomattox Court House, VA on 9 April 1865.
