A 20 year old student from a farm family in the Union District, he enlisted as Private, Company B, 15th South Carolina Infantry about 1 September 1861. He was appointed Sergeant, date not given.

On the Campaign

He was wounded in action at Fox's Gap on South Mountain on 14 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was in Tippah County, Mississippi in 1871 and died there in 1905.

His service from the Roll,1 which has him as W.P.H. Bailey, and says he died of wounds on South Mountain, and the index to his Compiled Service Records via the Historical Data Systems database. Personal details from family genealogists and the US Census of 1860.

He married F. L. Bennett (b. 1847) in November 1871.
