A 25 year old farmer on his mother's substantial farm at Flat Rock, Kershaw District, he enlisted as Private, Company D, 15th South Carolina Infantry about 1 September 1861.

On the Campaign

He was reported missing and presumed killed in action at Fox's Gap on South Mountain on 14 September 1862.
