About age 20, from the Williamsburg District, he enlisted as Private, Company G, 15th South Carolina Infantry on about 1 September 1861.
On the Campaign
He was mortally wounded in action at Fox's Gap on South Mountain on 14 September 1862.
The rest of the War
He died of wounds, probably in Richmond, VA on 4 January 1863.

His service from the Roll,1 which has him as Frank Cox and says he was killed at Gettysburg, and the index to his Compiled Service Records via the Historical Data Systems database, as R.F. Cox. Personal details from family genealogists. His gravesite is on Findagrave, which has text that his mortal wounding was at Second Manassas.
