From the Pickens District, he enrolled as Captain of Company D, 22nd South Carolina Infantry about 15 January 1862.

On the Campaign

He was wounded in action at Turner's Gap on South Mountain on 14 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was appointed Lieutenant Colonel by April 1863 and commanded the regiment at Jackson, MS in May and at Charleston in September 1863, but he resigned on 26 January 1864.
