Age 24, he enlisted as Private, Company E, 23rd South Carolina Infantry on 28 September 1861 in the Marion District.
On the Campaign
He was captured (reported missing) in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.
The rest of the War
He was sent from Ft. McHenry in Baltimore to Fortress Monroe, VA for exchange on 17 October and was absent, sick, in hospitals in Richmond and Danville, VA into February 1863. He was with his Company to at least the end of 1864.
