Before Antietam

He graduated from West Point in July 1860 and was breveted 2nd Lieutenant, 4th US Infantry. He served on frontier duty at Ft. Hoskins, Oregon Territory, and was commissioned 2nd Lieutenant, 8th US Infantry on 28 January and First Lieutenant on 14 May 1861. He was wounded in action at Cedar Mountain, VA on 9 August 1862.

On the Campaign

He commanded a detachment of two Companies - A and D - of the 8th US Infantry which were attached to the 2nd Battalion/12th US Infantry on the Maryland Campaign.

The rest of the War

He was regimental Adjutant from 1 December 1862 to 20 April 1863, then served as aide-de-camp to Major Generals Sedgwick and Wilson, and was promoted to Captain on 21 June 1864. He was honored by brevets to Captain on 9 August 1862 (for Cedar Mountain), Major on 29 November 1864 (for Franklin, TN), and Lieutenant Colonel 13 March 1865 for war service.

After the War

He continued in Regular Army service at garrisons in the South into 1871, then in the West to 1898. He was promoted to Major of the 21st US Infantry on 19 April 1886, Lieutenant Colonel of the 25th Infantry on 20 April 1891, and Colonel of the 12th Infantry on 1 October 1895. He served as Brigadier General of Volunteers for Spanish-American War service from 3 June 1898 to 24 February 1899. He retired on 1 April 1899 after more than 40 years in uniform.
