Before Antietam

A 22 year old farm worker on his father's place in Guilford Township, Winnebago County, IL, he enlisted on 23 September 1861 as Private, Company M, 8th Illinois Cavalry. He was appointed First Sergeant, date not given.

On the Campaign

He was killed in action at Boonsboro, MD on 15 September 1862.

After the War

He was originally buried in Boonsboro but was reinterred in the new Antietam National Cemetery in about 1867.
